MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - SOUTH TERMINAL EXPANSION
Miami, Florida

Titled "Ghost Palms," the project looks at the structure of five different palm trees and equates plant structure and window structure. On the floor, terrazzo is used to create their shadows. Terrazzo was selected not only for its durability, but also for the creative options it offers. Because the floor was to depict shadows, the ten colors of terrazzo used only black epoxy and a variety of different aggregates to create the different colors, which were set into the field floor pattern and colors. In addition, divider strips were used as drawing lines as well as outlines for the various colors involved. The terrazzo floor images are shadows cast by the vertical palms of the more abstract windows. Terrazzo, the performing art, has once again melded its strength and durability with its beauty and elegance, gracing the floors of the largest installation of terrazzo in an airport expansion.
