2009 Honor Award

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY - MAXWELL HALL
Winona, Minnesota

"Continuum" is inspired by the ideas of seeking, learning, community, and discovery. The floor evokes movement - the flow of ideas and intellectual thought and the search for information and personal growth. The 1,915 sf terrazzo artwork spans the lobby and connects to an existing terrazzo stairway and corridor. Crack isolation membrane was installed over an existing sand cushion terrazzo floor. To transition the new floor to the existing, a large section of the sand cushion cement terrazzo was removed, epoxy filled, and feathered. The floor contains six colors chosen for their visual harmony and as compliments to the building's permanent materials such as limestone, brick, and metal. The entry of the lobby is adjoined by a large vestibule which also incorporates one of the epoxy terrazzo colors used in the lobby.
